Ascension-Goryansk Church

Фото 1
The stone Ascension-Goryansk church was built in the 1840s thanks to the efforts of parishioners and donations from honorary citizen Khrisanf Ivanovich Obraztsov. During construction, many bones were discovered, which led to the assumption that an old cemetery had previously been located here.

According to pre-revolutionary sources, before the stone church was erected, there was a wooden one on this site, which, along with a chapel, was dismantled and sold to the village of Ozyorki. It is possible that the builders found remnants of a cemetery adjacent to the church. However, confirming this version is difficult, as there were more than a dozen settlements named Ozyorki in the Saratov province, and their church histories do not match the described events.

There is another version, according to which the stone church was completed in 1835, which is 14 years earlier than the commonly accepted date. Before it, there was an old church that later became Old Believer (possibly referring to the Spaso-Transfiguration Old Believer Church located across the road).

In 1847, the warm chapels in the refectory were consecrated: the right one in honor of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos and the left one in honor of Archangel Michael and other incorporeal powers. The church was also referred to as the Michael-Archangel Church. The cold main altar in honor of the Ascension of the Lord was consecrated in 1849. In 1859, a third cold chapel was consecrated in the name of the Holy and Righteous Simeon the God-Receiver and Anna the Prophetess. There were two stone benches and a wooden house, faced with bricks, at the church.

In the last quarter of the 19th century, a two-story stone building of the Holy Vladimir parish school was built behind the altar, where a church-school museum was later located. The houses for the clergy, consisting of two priests, a deacon, and two psalmists, belonged to the church.

During the counter-revolutionary uprising in October 1917, a machine gun point of the rebels was located in the church's bell tower, but it did not help the anti-Bolsheviks. Later, the church was closed by the Soviet authorities and completely destroyed in 1935. In its place, on Lenin Street, a residential building was constructed four years later.
