On August 17, 1803, a significant event occurred in the cultural life of Yekaterinodar with the opening of a public school thanks to the efforts of F.Ya. Bursak. The first lessons were taught by Moscow University student V. Ivantsenko and gymnasium student K. Polyakov, who taught Church Slavonic literacy, arithmetic, writing, as well as reading the Horologion and Psalter.
Before this, literacy and reading were taught at the Military Chancellery. On December 14, 1806, a district primary school began operating in Yekaterinodar, where 97 boys and 11 girls studied. On May 17, 1820, a 'full' gymnasium with a 7-year course was opened. Kirill Vasilyevich Rossinsky made a significant contribution to the development of education in Kuban, opening educational institutions not only in Yekaterinodar but also in the stanitsas.
After the death of K.V. Rossinsky on December 12, 1825, many church parish schools closed, and in 1829, the Black Sea Gymnasium ceased operations. Twenty years later, on December 18, 1848, the 'Regulations on the Caucasian Educational Institution' was approved, restoring the military gymnasium. In 1857, a fire destroyed the gymnasium building, and it was temporarily relocated until it moved to Yeysk in 1861.
On November 8, 1872, the construction of the Kuban Military Gymnasium began, beautifying the central street of Yekaterinodar. The building featured a curved risalit with a classical pediment and 29 windows on the facade, topped with the dome of the Sergiev Church. Here, classes began for gymnasium students transferred from Yeysk, but in 1888, the gymnasium was closed. Historian N.F. Yurkin points to 1889 as the year of closure.
From 1890, the building housed the Kuban Alexandrov Real School, where courses in drawing and sketching for adults opened in 1891. A meteorological station also began operating, publishing weather data in the local press. During the holidays, a youth club organized expeditions to the Caucasus Mountains to study minerals.
After 1920, the former gymnasium building housed a military school of the 22nd Rifle Division, and later educational institutions of the Adygean Autonomous Region. In 1938, the Krasnodar Institute of Foreign Languages opened here. The building was destroyed during the war, and in 1961, a 5-story House of Councils was built in its place, which was expanded by two more floors in 1967-1968. This building, located at Krasnodar, Krasnaya Street, 35, became the center of administrative life in Kuban, with two century-old plane trees nearby, witnesses to many historical events.
