Military-Economic Warehouses, Late 18th Century: Old Courtyard Warehouses

Фото 1
Next to the ensemble of the New Kriegs-Commissionariat, created by Nicolas Legrand, are the Military-Economic Warehouses, known as the "Old Courtyard Warehouses." Their construction took place in several stages in the second half of the 18th century. Similar structures began to be built in Moscow during the time of Peter the Great. The original composition of the ensemble adhered to the principles of late Baroque, but as a result of reconstructions at the end of the 18th century, features of Classicism became evident. The complex acquired a symmetrical structure with a central entrance, surrounded by two-story guard buildings. Later, probably at the end of the 18th or the beginning of the 19th century, single-story side buildings appeared, completing the perimeter around the inner courtyard.

The presence of the guardhouse and the enclosed quadrangle allowed the Old Courtyard Warehouses to be used for various needs. In addition to logistical tasks, they could serve as a garrison guardhouse, a quartermaster institution, or a headquarters. The two-story buildings are connected to the gates by a fence, and single-story side wings are attached along the street line.

The facade facing Sadovnicheskaya Street is adorned with decorative elements characteristic of Moscow architecture at the turn of the 18th-19th centuries. The guardhouses feature rusticated risalits and pediments. Arched divisions extend the full height of the two-story buildings. The central gates, surrounded by two-story wings, have been reconstructed multiple times, preserving niches, an arched vault, and a stepped attic. Semi-circular windows of the side wings are located in smooth arched niches, with paired pilasters between them emphasizing symmetry. The expressiveness of the facade is enhanced by dormers in the pediments.

Until October 1917, the complex was under the management of the commander of the Moscow Military District. During the Soviet era, military institutions were also located here. In 1979-80, military builders carried out repairs on the buildings on Sadovnicheskaya Street. Until recently, the territory of the warehouses housed the park of military unit No. 54373.
