In 1873, the future Tsar Alexander III arrived from Russia to visit the Earle's shipyard and assess the results of the work on one of the two steam-powered yachts ordered for him. In memory of Alexander III's visit, a memorial plaque has been installed on the wall of Kirk Ella House on Church Lane, where he stayed with Earle's managing director Edward Reed.
