Wedding of Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna

It has come to pass what she had long dreamed of, and everything went simply and beautifully.

On November 17, 1916, in Kyiv, in a small Three Saints Church, a modest wedding took place for Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna and Colonel Nikolai Alexandrovich Kulikovsky, a hereditary nobleman of the Russian Imperial Army. The Grand Duchess had waited for this happy moment for about 13 years. In the personal archive of Prince Nikita Nikitich, letters from his grandfather, Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich, to his wife, Grand Duchess Ksenia Alexandrovna, were kept. One of the letters was dedicated to the wedding of Olga Alexandrovna. These letters have never been published, so many will be interested to learn about the wedding of the youngest daughter of the Peacemaker Tsar.

At half past four, Empress Maria Feodorovna arrived, and we agreed that she would go with me to keep the secret. After tea at five o'clock, we set off to see Olga. The Empress stayed in the car while I went out to bless Olga. There was a crowd, all the sisters and doctors, music was playing. Olga was dressed in an old but lovely dress resembling a Greek tunic, with a white orange blossom on her head and at her waist, and a veil down to her knees. I urged her on. She threw on a cloak, and we went together with the Empress, Olga, and T.A. Ahead were Jimmy, the groomsman, and the regimental commander. We safely reached the church, located not far from Podil. At the entrance, the singers began to sing, and the wedding started. Olga looked happy and lovely, he also shone, and it was pleasant to look at them. The singers sang magnificently, the choir from the Vladimir Cathedral. The church was cozy and beautiful, reminiscent of the Tsarskoye Selo in the Grand Palace, but painted red. Olga's groomsmen were Aglaimov and Pupka, who held himself with dignity, while Jimmy had only Susanin. There was no one in the church except us. Some general peeked in, but upon hearing the exclamation "the VKOA is getting married," quickly left, which looked amusing. The service went with complete decorum and sympathy, although by general standards, the wedding was modest. After the church, we returned to the hospital, this time Olga with Jimmy, and the Empress with me and T.A. Upon arrival, we were met by all the sisters and others, shouting "bitter" and showering the newlyweds with a mixture of barley and something else. Then we sat down for dinner. The Empress stayed. The dinner was cheerful and lasted quite a long time; due to the abundance of wine, the sisters got a bit tipsy and giggled. Olga shone with happiness. At half past eight, I saw the Empress home and returned to my place. At 10:45, the newlyweds left, no one saw them off, as he did not want that. The Empress was glad to have attended the wedding and was infinitely charming. After dinner, we sat in Olga's room, Jimmy and Olga on the couch, the Empress nearby, and everything was cozy, as if it were meant to be. Everything went well. Measures were taken to ensure there was no police presence; for this, I called the governor and issued a categorical order. What she had long dreamed of came to pass simply and beautifully. May God grant them happiness and, most importantly, no disappointment.
