Roller Steam Mill of the Chernukhins

Фото 1
The Chernukhins' mill was located in buildings marked O, O1, O2, T, T1, T2. It is a four-story brick structure on a high basement, built in a rectangular shape with risalits. The walls are massive, and the windows are small. On either side of the main volume are risalits: one with a single axis of windows, the other with two.

The long facades of the rectangular body are divided by pilasters that frame the verticals of the middle and end windows and encompass the corners of the building. The facade decoration is concentrated at the level of the top floor, which is topped with a sloping roof and a cornice on brackets. Between the cornice and the top row of windows with arched lintels are small decorative elements. About two-thirds up the height of the windows runs a shelf, curved over the openings, creating a light graphic pattern on the wall. At the edges of the body, the walls rise higher, creating the impression that massive towers have been added to the ends of the building. They are topped with a cornice on brackets resembling machicolations and an attic. The surface of the attic is divided by short pilasters into square sections with openings in the shape of isosceles crosses. Pinnacles are placed at the corners of the attic.

The history of this place begins in the 20th century when Syzran became one of the leading centers for grain processing in the Volga region, second only to Saratov, Nizhny Novgorod, and Samara. This was due to the proximity of rail and water routes and the cheapness of fuel. The largest roller steam mills in Syzran belonged to millers-industrialists Chernukhins, Sterlyadkins, Ilyins, and Tsvetkov.

The roller steam mill of the merchant Chernukhins' sons was built according to the design of engineers Malinovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. The stone for construction was brought from the villages of Yelshanka and Zaborovka (the estate of Prince Gagarin), and timber was supplied by local timber merchants. The mechanical parts of the mill were manufactured by the Samara branch of the Erlanger partnership, the Samara Mechanical Plant of Zhuravlev and Lebedev. These firms also fulfilled orders for other Syzran mills and were known for their conscientious execution.

In 1908, K.N. Chernukhin founded the trading and industrial firm 'Chernukhin K.N. and Sons', engaged in grain processing and bread trade. The Chernukhins' trading house had accounts in the Syzran branch of the state bank, in the Volga-Kama Commercial Bank, and in the Russian Bank for Foreign Trade. The products of the Chernukhins were awarded gold medals in 1908. After 1917, the mill was nationalized, all workers and employees were dismissed, and it became a reserve. Currently, the building is not in use.

Clarification from a website guest: the article describes the mill of merchant A.A. Sterlyadkin, located in the former city block 45 on Kazanskaya Street (now Karl Marx Street) and used by the grain products combine. It is mistakenly attributed to the Chernukhins. The ruins of the Chernukhins' mill are located in the former city block 49, as confirmed by archival documents. It is necessary to restore historical justice and return the objects their correct names.
