The Estate of Zherekhovo

Фото 1
Why the village is called Zherekhovo is still a topic of debate among local historians. According to legend, the local river was home to many zherekhs, a fish from the carp family, which gave the village its name. Since ancient times, these lands belonged to the noble family of Vsevolozhskys. In the 17th century, they built a luxurious estate here, the construction of which took several decades. The building was made to last for centuries, adding an egg mixture to the lime. Nearby, ponds with cobblestone bottoms were dug, and a deciduous forest was planted. The main architectural feature was and remains the tower with original "candles" with a stone flame. The story of its creation is both romantic and sad.

The prince's son, Vladimir Vsevolozhsky, fell in love with a serf girl named Katya. They had children, and a wedding was on the horizon, but the marriage did not take place. Vladimir had to leave the estate, and his children were not given their father's surname. Later, he married another woman, but the relationship did not work out. Upon returning to his native village, he accepted Katya's children and gave them a noble surname. As they grew up, they remodeled the estate and installed 8 candles on the tower in memory of their mother.

Zherekhovo also preserves other monuments: the 18th-century Sergiev Church in the Baroque style and the 19th-century Church of the Bogolyubskaya Icon of the Mother of God. During Soviet times, a rest house operated here, and later a Psychoneurological Boarding School was established.
