The lands in the Korchakovsky district of the Oryol province belonged to the Bunin family since the late 17th century. E.N. Ashikhmina notes that in the late 18th century, the villages of Muratovo, Krasnaya Slobodka, and Novye Prilepy, as well as the neighboring village of Pokrovskoye (Bunino) in the Deshkin district of Oryol province, were bequeathed by Afanasy Bunin to his third daughter, Ekaterina Afanasevna (in marriage, Protasova), and the minor daughters of the deceased Natalia Afanasevna (in marriage, Velyaminova), Maria, Avdotya, and Anna.

Ekaterina Ivanovna Yelagina (1820, 1891), born Moier, was the daughter of Maria Andreyevna Protasova and Ivan Filippovich Moier, and was the granddaughter of Ekaterina Afanasevna Protasova, the mistress of Muratovo.

In her memoirs, she writes that in 1809 or 1810, her grandmother completed the construction of a house in Muratovo, which was later sold and still exists in Podzavalovo. Her grandmother moved to Muratovo, and every evening her daughters, nieces, Zhukovsky, the maid, and lace-makers carried soil to the terrace overlooking the young garden. Muratovo was then as peaceful a place as Bunino, where they moved in 1837.

Addressing her children, the memoirist continues: the trees in the Muratovo garden were planted by their great-grandmother, grandmothers, Zhukovsky, and their acquaintances. Every spot in this garden was dear with memories of past joys and sorrows. However, for them, this garden was mute. She did not know her mother, and her grandmother in Muratovo was sad and silent. The grandmother always tried to leave good water behind, digging wells.

From the memoirs of E.I. Yelagina, it is also known that after the marriage of her daughters, Ekaterina Afanasevna Protasova divided Muratovo among them, leaving only a life interest in a thousand rubles, which the daughters were to pay her.

In 1822, Maria Andreyevna Protasova-Moier planted a garden in her part of Muratovo. This land was inherited by Ekaterina Ivanovna from her mother. V.A. Vlasov published a document from 1827 describing the Muratovo estate, including the appearance and interior of the "gentleman's wing," which has survived since Zhukovsky's time.

Muratovo and the neighboring Kholkh are associated with the name of the great poet Vasily Andreyevich Zhukovsky. The poet wrote about Muratovo, describing the miller, the tall house, the shining pond, and the peninsula.

In the summer of 1810, Ekaterina Afanasevna Protasova moved to Muratovo with her daughters from Belev. Under Zhukovsky's guidance, who arrived in 1809, a large manor house was built. The Protasova girls were the poet's nieces, and E.A. Protasova was his half-sister. Zhukovsky left his post as editor of "Vestnik Evropy" to be of service to the Protasovs.

The village gave its name to two humorous magazines that Zhukovsky published with the help of his students. Zhukovsky and the girls loved walks along the banks of the Orlik, where the poet found inspiration for his creativity.

The relationship between Zhukovsky and Masha Protasova, which blossomed in Muratovo, influenced his lyrics. However, consent for their marriage was never obtained.

Zhukovsky visited his friend A.A. Plescheyev at his estate, where he welcomed the New Year of 1814. In 1811, he bought the village of Kholkh to be close to the Protasovs.

During the war of 1812, Zhukovsky, an aide to Kutuzov, was in Oryol, where he dealt with hospitals and wrote the poem "The Singer in the Camp of Russian Warriors." In 1813, he came on leave to Muratovo.

In 1821, I.F. Moier visited Muratovo, where he transferred his part of the land to the peasants. Muratovo became the property of Ekaterina Ivanovna and later her descendants.

The last time Zhukovsky was in Muratovo was in September-October 1839. Today, Muratovo and Kholkh are part of the tourist route "Golden Ring of the Uritsky District." A memorial sign dedicated to Zhukovsky's stay has been erected at the site of the former Muratovo estate. "Zhukovsky Readings" are held here annually.
