P.V. Shchotkin's Estate in Pavlovo

Фото 1
The center of the Pavlovsky district is the ancient city of Pavlovo, located 75 km from Nizhny Novgorod on the right bank of the Oka River. The city is known not only for its metalworking craftsmen but also for its harmonious architectural appearance that beautifully blends with the surrounding landscape. Among its architectural landmarks stands the former Merchant Shchotkin's House on Krasnoarmeyskaya Street.

This historic estate was built in 1899 by Pyotr Vasilyevich Shchotkin, a successful merchant and owner of a factory producing shovels and locks. The house has the status of a cultural heritage site of regional significance. The estate includes the former residential house and a production building. The small one-story structure, executed in the classical style, is faced with red brick. A distinctive feature of the house is the elegant hanging turret-bay, adorned with lace stucco featuring classical floral motifs. The conical roof is covered with metallic 'scales' and topped with a wooden carved spire. At one time, this was the only house on the street with a turret and an ornate wrought-iron grille on the roof, which served as a balcony.

The left part of the building was added in the 20th century, taking into account the architectural features of the estate. Currently, the Shchotkin house houses a restaurant, which was previously called 'Oka' and has now been renamed 'Rus'.
