Tarasov Painter's Estate in the Kostroma Sloboda Museum-Reserve

Фото 1
An example of a peasant dwelling typical for the northeastern Kostroma region includes a "black" or "kurun" izba and a barn, also known as a granary. These buildings were transported from the village of Mukhino in the Vokhomsky district: the residential house in 1965 and the barn in 1969. Restoration was carried out according to the project of architect V.S. Shaposhnikov in two stages: the barn in 1970 and the house from 1973 to 1978.

The residential house, hewn "in the oblo" from pine logs, belongs to the type of peasant izbas "brus". This is a twin izba, consisting of two separate log cabins, a bridge, and a yard, set on a subcellar and forming a single rectangular volume under a gabled roof with a cover and chickens supporting the flows. A "hanging" porch adjoins the bridge on the side, and a ramp made of log planks leads to the hayloft of the yard. The main facade consists of two log cabins, dividing it into unequal parts corresponding to the winter izba and the living room. The izba has three rectangular windows on the facade: a vertical one in the center and two square ones on the sides. The living room has a volokovoe window, under which is the entrance to the subcellar.

The front part of the house includes a "zimnitsa" with a stove without a chimney, where smoke exited through an opening in the ceiling, with sleeping areas, built-in benches, a golbets with a staircase to the cellar, and the living room. The interior is decorated with paintings on the boards of the golbets, the six-door cupboard, and the table, depicting bouquets of flowers and domestic birds. The two rooms of the izba are separated by a narrow dark corridor perpendicular to the entrance hall. The subcellar under the living part was used for storing vegetables, and sleds were placed under the entrance hall for the summer.

In the back part of the house on the first floor is the cattle yard with a double wall at the end to retain heat. On the second floor, called the povityem, there are a hayloft and storerooms for harness and household utensils. The barn, located to the west, is also hewn "in the oblo" from pine logs and set on boulders. Almost square in plan, the volume is topped with a gabled roof made of two layers of shingles with a birch bark lining. A cover runs along the ridge of the roof, and chickens support the flows made of whole logs with a carved groove. One of the longitudinal facades has a roof that forms a canopy, under which is the entrance with a shield door. In front of the entrance is a wooden platform supported by cantilevered extensions of the logs of the two lower crowns. Inside the granary are wooden troughs.
