Kireevsky Estate in Kireevka

Фото 1
The Kireevskaya settlement left its mark in Russian literature and ethnography thanks to the Kireevsky brothers, Ivan and Peter, known Slavophiles. The estate belonged to Peter, but Ivan spent his childhood here and often returned later.

Peter Kireevsky became famous as a collector of Russian folklore, while his brother Ivan became one of the founders of Slavophilism and a philosopher.

Their father, Vasily Ivanovich Kireevsky, was an educated and decent man. In 1812, he voluntarily took over the management of a hospital in Oryol, establishing its branch in Kireevka, where both Russian and French soldiers were treated.

From 1837, Peter Vasilievich owned the Kireevskaya settlement and the village of Lebedevskie Dvory. He remained in Kireevka until his death in 1856, collecting an extensive library both in Moscow and in Kireevka, where he settled in his later years.

Famous folklorists and writers visited Peter, such as P.I. Yakushkin, M.A. Stakhovich, A.V. Markovich, T.N. Granovsky, and I.S. Turgenev. Turgenev wrote to S.T. Aksakov about his visit to Peter Kireevsky, noting his honesty and kindness. There is a legend that Nikolai Gogol also visited Kireevka and planted an oak tree in front of Kireevsky's house.

Peter Vasilievich cared for the peasants, distributing bread during famine years, teaching, and treating them. He freed the peasants long before the 1861 reform. Documents confirming the liberation of peasants Mikhail and Vasily Grigoryev, Samuil Nazarov, Iosif Spiridonov, Agafon Ivanov, and Dmitry Kozmin are preserved in the school museum of Kireevka. A receipt for the treatment of peasant Afanasy Petrov has also been preserved.

Kireevsky's house, which burned down during the Great Patriotic War, was spacious and stood on a high bank of the river Sukhaia Orlitsa. The view from there opened onto the river, meadows, and a small forest. Peter Vasilievich himself decorated the surroundings, planting a linden alley that has survived to this day.

After Peter Kireevsky's death, his estate passed to Sergey Ivanovich Kireevsky, the son of his brother Ivan. Later, Kireevka was bought by Valery Nikolaevich Lyaskovsky, and on the eve of the revolution, his daughter Nadezhda Valeryevna Shermozanova lived here with her husband Grigory Tigranovich Shermozanov.

Kireevka takes pride in its past. The name of Peter Vasilievich is known to every local resident and student of the school named after him. The school museum has two exhibitions: one dedicated to Peter Vasilievich and his time, and the other to the nature of the Oryol region. Rare images of his relatives, such as mother A. Yelagina and brother Ivan, are kept here. The spirit of Kireevsky, as the locals say, still hovers over these lands. The first director of the museum, Margarita Nikolaevna Deeva, believes that Peter Vasilievich helps them in studying literature and history. His contribution to the preservation of Russian folklore is highly valued by descendants, and it is thanks to him that ancient Russian songs have not disappeared over the centuries.
