This remote settlement is rarely visited by tourists, but despite its seeming unremarkableness, the village takes pride in its history connected to great families.

In the late 18th century, these lands were gifted to Andrei Vyazemsky, the governor of Penza and Nizhny Novgorod. He bequeathed them to his daughter Ekaterina Andreevna, the wife of the famous historian and writer Nikolai Karamzin.

In the 19th century, this place was extremely remote, which led Alexander Nikolayevich Karamzin, the son of the renowned historian, to call it "Ardatovskaya Kamchatka."

After retiring, A.N. Karamzin moved to his parental estate with servants, a gardener, and a doctor. He settled near the village of Bolshoy Makatelyo, in an area called Rogozhka. The manor house consisted of two whitewashed huts with a porch, which were later converted into a front hall and expanded with two rooms.

That year, many changes occurred in the area: a school opened for children from three nearby villages, and a hospital with a maternity ward was built. Several local girls were sent by Alexander Nikolayevich to study in Nizhny Novgorod.

In 1850, Alexander Nikolayevich married Natalia Vasilievna Obolenskaya, a lady-in-waiting at the royal court, and the estate began to develop rapidly. A study, gallery, and storerooms were added to the house, and a park with alleys of cedars, firs, and oaks was laid out. A system of five ponds was created in the ravines.

With the onset of the war with Turkey, Karamzin, along with the peasants from the surrounding villages and his wife, who became a nurse, joined the people's militia. After the war, he built a hospital for the disabled and a shelter for the elderly at the estate, and later orphanages and homes for the disabled were opened.

Today, the main manor house is quite well preserved. The lower pond still exists, and several private houses have been built on its shore. Although it is difficult, one can navigate the entire territory of the former park, making their way through the thickets. Remnants of its former grandeur are recalled by the diverse and rare trees planted during Karamzin's time, some of which have died and fallen, the rugged terrain, and the beautiful peninsulas on the large pond.
