The Estate of Nobleman M.V. Pustoshkin

Фото 1
A two-story stone mansion, built by nobleman Pustoshkin on Kazanskaya Street before the fire of 1906, once rivaled the homes of respected townspeople. Now, this building houses a narcological dispensary, and likely, visitors do not pay attention to its ancient architecture.

Meanwhile, the architecture of the house deserves attention. The main facade, facing Volodarsky Street, is symmetrical and adorned with three risalits. The central risalit is distinguished by arched windows on the first floor and the mezzanine, and is topped with curved pediments. The side risalits have strict classical triangular shapes.

The facade of the building is now covered with cracks, the plaster has fallen off, and a modern air conditioning unit has been installed above the entrance. Nevertheless, the rusticated pilasters at the corners of the risalits still display relief images of a wreath and ribbons. These elements are characteristic of classicism and stand out against the backdrop of the city's private buildings. The house resembles a fallen but proud nobleman.

The history of Syzran is full of mysteries, and one of them is related to the nobleman who built this house. According to local archives, the estate belonged to Matvey Vasilyevich Pustoshkin, and nearby was the house of his brother, Yefrem Vasilyevich. However, other sources claim that the owner was Ivan Nikolayevich Pustoshkin.

In Samara province before the revolution, there were many noble estates, including in the village of Davydovka, owned by the Pustoshkins. Little is known about the patriarch of the family, Yefrem Lyubimovich Pustoshkin. In 1821, he formalized his status as a nobleman, although he likely came from "pilot's children." Rear Admiral S.A. Pustoshkin is also known.

Yefrem's son, Grigory Yefremovich, became a collegiate assessor and acquired an estate in the village of Bogorodskoye from Colonel Naryshkin. According to unconfirmed reports, Napoleon visited there in October 1812.

This estate was inherited by Vasily Grigoryevich, known for his stern demeanor and nicknamed Khan. He was a father of many children, and his sons, Matvey and Yefrem, held important positions and participated in charity.

Matvey Vasilyevich, possibly Ivan Nikolayevich, was the chairman of the Syzran district zemstvo administration and a deputy of the I State Duma. He fought for the abolition of the death penalty, but unsuccessfully. At the local level, he tried to organize an electric tram and lighting in Syzran, but these plans were not realized.

In 1922, the building was municipalized, and its owner fled with the Whites. After being a children's home, since the 1960s, it has housed the city narcological dispensary.
