The Ugut Museum was opened on June 23, 1979, as a people's museum. Its founder and first director was Pyotr Semyonovich Bakhlikov (1932-1999), who was honored with the titles of "Honored Worker of Culture of the Russian Federation" in 1990, "Honored Figure of Culture of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug" in 1995, and "Honorary Citizen of the Surgut District" in 1999. Today, the museum's collections hold about 6,500 items. The museum has the most complete collection of cultural and household items of the Yugra Khanty.

The ethnography of the Yugra Khanty, the indigenous people of the region, and the paintings of Pyotr Semyonovich were priority areas in the formation of the museum's collections over three decades. Currently, the collection of the Ugut Local History Museum, although not very extensive, is the most complete collection of household items of the Yugra group of Eastern Khanty. The museum's funds include more than 6,000 exhibits, distributed across 17 collections.

The museum features three permanent exhibitions: Paleontology of Yugra, Life of the Yugra Khanty, Worldview of the Yugra Khanty, Trade Routes, and Christianization of Yugra.
