The Uglich Museum, one of the oldest on the Upper Volga, has existed for over a hundred years and enjoys deserved popularity and authority.
The Museum of Antiquities in Uglich was opened on June 3, 1892, in the presence of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and his wife Elizabeth Feodorovna, gathering many townspeople. It was managed by the Imperial Moscow Archaeological Society. Among the first and valuable exhibits of the museum is the "Uglich Exiled Bell," which was returned from Tobolsk in May 1892 and took a place of honor in the museum.
The territory of the Uglich Kremlin, where the museum is located, is a unique natural-landscape and archaeological monument. The architectural ensemble includes seven buildings and structures built in the 15th and 19th centuries.
In 2015, a monument "To Tsarevich Dmitry the Murdered" was erected in the Uglich Kremlin, created by sculptor A. Rukavishnikov and artist Igumen Raphael Simakov, inspired by the image from M. Nesterov's painting.
The memorial-exhibition complex "Relics and Treasures of the Uglich Tragedy" in the Church of Tsarevich Dmitry on Blood contains items related to the death and canonization of Tsarevich Dmitry, the youngest son of Ivan the Terrible.
On the upper floor of the Palace of the Appanage Princes, an exhibition "Uglich in the History of the Russian State. 16th, Early 20th Century" is presented in ancient showcases, where portraits of monarchs, items of townspeople and authorities, weapons, awards, and coins from hoards found in the vicinity can be seen.
The historical department on the first floor of the building is rich in rare monuments of urban culture of the 16th and 17th centuries, while the exhibition "Memory of the Ancient Walls" tells about the oldest building in the Upper Volga region.
The Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral is interesting for its wall paintings, wooden iconostasis, and collection of icons from the 15th to 18th centuries.
In the Epiphany Cathedral, the exhibition "Town Dwellers. The History of Uglich in Faces" is presented, showcasing merchant portraits of the 18th-19th centuries, portraits of Uglich residents from the 20th century, as well as icons, parsunas, embroidered shrouds, and sculptures. In summer, the vocal ensemble "Ark" performs here.
In the City Duma building, the exhibition "Forgotten Art, Object and Masterpiece" is open, demonstrating decorative and applied art products and household items from the museum collection.
The Red Hall is used for concerts, celebrations, and mass events, while temporary exhibitions are placed in the exhibition halls.
The Nikolsky Bridge leading to the Kremlin has been restored in the style of the 19th century, and the old paving stones have been preserved. At the entrance to the Kremlin territory is the Gallery of Contemporary Orthodox Art "Under the Gracious Cover," featuring works by artist Igumen Raphael Simakov and church household items.
