Bishop Makary, in the world Makary Trifonovich Troitsky, was born in 1830 in the Sevsky district of the Oryol province in a priest's family. He received a secondary theological education at the Oryol Theological Seminary, graduating in 1852, and then completed his studies at the Kyiv Theological Academy in 1856, earning a degree of Candidate of Theology.

In October of the same year, he began teaching at the Oryol Theological Seminary and was ordained a priest on November 8, 1856. In 1865, Makary became a law teacher at the Alexandrov Institute for Noble Maidens in Oryol. In 1877, he was elevated to the rank of protodeacon.

On October 15, 1879, he took monastic vows, and on October 28, he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite and appointed abbot of the Trubchevsk Spaso-Choln Monastery in the Oryol diocese. On February 25, 1881, he was transferred as abbot to the Znamensky Monastery in Moscow.

On July 23, 1882, Makary was consecrated as Bishop of Ostrogozhsk, vicar of the Voronezh diocese. From May 21, 1886, he served as Bishop of Orenburg and Ural, and from October 22, 1895, as Bishop of Kaluga and Borovsk. Despite his advanced age, he actively visited the diocese, inspecting churches and schools and delivering sermons.

On July 10, 1901, Makary was retired to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. In 1902, he became the manager of the Belev Monastery. Bishop Makary passed away on July 3, 1906, at the Belev Spaso-Transfiguration Monastery and was buried in the Transfiguration Church behind the right choir.
