Trinity Church in Rostov-on-Don

One of the revived pre-revolutionary churches in Rostov is the Trinity Church, built in 1855 and destroyed during the Soviet years.

The history of the Trinity parish begins in the 18th century, when the current Railway District was home to the Cossack stanitsa of Gniloiskaya. The nearest chapel for local residents (in honor of Saint Dimitri, Metropolitan of Rostov) was located in the fortress of Dimitri of Rostov. Due to difficulties accessing this church in bad weather and during floods of the Temernik River, the residents turned to engineer Rigelman with a request to build a chapel and assign one of the priests from the Dimitri Church to it.

The request was granted, and in 1765 the first wooden chapel, consecrated in the name of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity, appeared in Gniloiskaya stanitsa. The church utensils for services were brought from the Dimitri Church, and the first priest was Ivan Kaloshin. In 1784, construction began on a wooden Trinity Church at the site of the chapel, which was consecrated on July 27, 1785. The church clergy at that time included priest Martyn Petrov and deacon Petr Petrov. The church was located on Trinity descent (now Relief Street). After 70 years, the wooden building had deteriorated, and in 1855 a stone church with a two-tier bell tower was erected on the same site. The new Trinity Church became the spiritual center of the stanitsa and lasted until the arrival of the Bolsheviks.

After the Bolsheviks seized the stanitsa, the parish faced persecution, and some clergy were killed. The church was looted and ultimately destroyed in the 1930s. In 1955, barracks for river workers were built on its site, which stood until the collapse of the USSR and the beginning of the revival of Orthodoxy in the Don region. In 1995, the local Orthodox community built a chapel on the territory of the former church courtyard, which later became a small temple. The reconstruction of the main church in honor of the Holy Trinity began in 2001, and regular services started in it in 2003. On the Feast of the Holy Trinity in 2005, the first patronal service of the revived church took place, gathering many parishioners.
