In 1888, Alexander III visited Kuban, which was a significant event for the Kuban Cossacks. Preparations for the emperor's arrival were thorough: lists of unreliable individuals were compiled and monitored, and accommodations for high-ranking guests were prepared. However, the main task was the construction of the Triumphal Arch.

Architect and artist V.A. Filippov developed the original project. The triumphal gates, through which the emperor and his family were to pass, included a main, wider passage and two walkways along the sidewalks. The arch rested on side supports, which were topped with four towers with spires crowned by gilded double-headed eagles.

The upper parts of the towers and the frieze above the arch were adorned with hanging columns. Icons were placed on the cornice on both sides under gilded carved canopies: on the city entrance side, the image of Saint Alexander Nevsky, and on the other side, Saint Catherine the Great Martyr.

Beneath the images, gilded inscriptions were carved in Slavic script: “Alexander III. May Your Guardian Angel bless You, Great Sovereign, with God's Grace” and “In memory of the visit of Emperor Alexander III, Empress Maria Feodorovna, and heir Tsarevich Nikolai Alexandrovich to the city of Yekaterinodar in 1888.”

The arch and its towers were covered with shingle roofing. The Sovereign and his family stayed in Yekaterinodar for three days: September 21, 22, and 23. In addition to the arch, a book titled “Kuban Cossack Army. 1696-1888” was urgently published.

The Triumphal Arch was located at the intersection of Ekaterininskaya and Kotlyarovskaya streets (now Mira and Sedina) near the Seven-Pillar Cathedral.

After the revolution, the destruction of representatives of the “old” world and works of art deemed “bourgeois” began. Two years after the establishment of Soviet power, the monument to Catherine the Second was demolished, followed by the arch.

A campaign against historical heritage unfolded in the newspapers. In January 1926, the City Council proposed to “immediately dismantle the ‘royal gates’ to use the bricks for paving the sidewalk.”

As a result, the monument of Russian architecture was destroyed, and the arch, built in the ancient Moscow style of the 16th century, was obliterated.

In 2006, a decision was made to restore the Triumphal Arch in Krasnodar. Due to the lack of blueprints, construction was delayed for two years. Architects had to recreate the monument from photographs collected from all over Kuban.

The opening of the new Triumphal Arch took place in the spring of 2008. The structure was built in a new location: at the intersection of Krasnaya and Babushkina.
