The Khamovniki Barracks represent a complex of three identical buildings, constructed between 1807 and 1809. Researchers suggest that the architect of this project was Luigi Rusca, and his ideas were realized by Mikhail Matveyevich Kazakov, the son of the famous architect M.F. Kazakov.

The barracks were intended for housing the Astrakhan Infantry Regiment, which consisted of three battalions. The main buildings were located along the street: the lower floors were designated for soldiers, while the upper ones were for officers.

Along the alley, there were three buildings that included stables and sheds. Two single-story wings at the ends of the ensemble served as stables and sheds for senior officers.

A parade ground was arranged in front of the barracks after a few years. Over time, new buildings appeared in the courtyard, and the buildings along the alleys were reconstructed and raised. The ensemble of the barracks is a vivid example of mature classicism. The unity of the ensemble is emphasized by the uniform height of the ground floor, the rusticated first floors of the barracks, and the perimeter of the services. Above them rise the upper floors with porticos consisting of four pairs of Tuscan columns. The length of the porticos is increased by pilasters at the corners of the risalits. The facades are complemented by smooth walls of the fence between the buildings, which feature wide semicircular arches of the gates.
