In the ancient city of Kostroma, there are many attractions. Many know about the most beautiful fire tower in Russia, the famous Susaninskaya Square, and the ancient temples. But there is another remarkable place, the Trade Rows of Kostroma. They are nearly 250 years old. In the 1770s, the city became one of the key centers of entrepreneurship in the European part of the Russian Empire. The old trade rows no longer met the requirements of the time, and the local authorities decided to build more spacious and modern ones. The project was entrusted to Kostroma architect Stepan Vorotilov.

The basis of Vorotilov's project was the standard sections of Russian merchant shops: each store was provided with a separate arched span of the gallery. The architect also took care of storage spaces for goods and rooms for negotiations and administration. Vorotilov paid attention to details: he rounded the corners of the trade rows so that carriages would not hit the building while turning, and passersby could see the departing carriage better. The main rows were called Red, as expensive and beautiful goods were sold there: fur coats, furs, fabrics, velvet, and leather products.

However, the largest center became the Large Flour Rows, intended for wholesale trade in grain, flour, fodder, and bread. Over time, new rows appeared around the merchant shops: kvass, fish, meat, leather, and others. By the mid-19th century, the Trade Rows became not only the main center of entrepreneurship in Kostroma but also a landmark. Meetings and business gatherings were held here. Several centuries have passed, and the Trade Rows of Kostroma still fulfill their direct purpose. Such structures have not survived in many cities of our vast country.
