An amazing event is connected with the Kolomenskoe Reserve, the appearance of the icon of the Mother of God, Sovereign. This occurred on the day Nicholas II was overthrown, and the faithful perceived it as a sign from the Mother of God, who, in their opinion, took on royal authority over Russia during the time of turmoil. The icon was discovered in the basement of the ancient Ascension Church, founded in 1528 in Kolomenskoe.

The Church of the Ascension of the Lord is the first tent-shaped church in the territory of modern Moscow and the Moscow region. According to legend, it was built in gratitude for the birth of the heir Ivan Vasilyevich, who became Tsar Ivan the Terrible. However, the foundation of the church was laid two years before his birth, but this does not diminish the significance of the church. It has survived many trials, from the Time of Troubles to Soviet persecutions of the church, and still stands tall in the reserve.

The most significant event for the Ascension Church in the last century was the discovery of the icon of the Mother of God, Sovereign, on March 15, 1917. On that day, peasant Evdokiya Andrianova, following dreams in which the Mother of God appeared to her, came to Kolomenskoe and found an ancient wooden icon in the church's basement.

Although the icon had already darkened, the Holy Synod believed it was painted no more than a century and a half ago. Due to the historical context, as it was found on the day of Nicholas II's overthrow, the icon quickly gained fame. In its honor, many churches were built and consecrated, pilgrimages were organized, copies were made, and the feast of the icon of the Mother of God, Sovereign, became one of the most revered in Orthodoxy. Today, after many years in the storerooms of the Historical Museum, the icon has been returned to the church and is surrounded by veneration.
