Holy Trinity Nicholas Male Monastery in Gorokhovets

Фото 1
The Trinity-Nicholas Male Monastery is an ancient monastic abode located in the city of Gorokhovets in the Vladimir region on the picturesque Nikolskaya or Puzhalovaya Hill. The monastery was founded in the 17th century, and according to tradition, there was previously a small monastery established by St. Sergius of Radonezh during his journey through Vladimir to the Nizhny Novgorod region. The central church of the monastery became the Trinity Cathedral, laid in 1681 and completed in 1689. The cathedral has two floors, which house two churches: the warm church of Nicholas on the first floor and the cold church of the Holy Trinity on the second. The cathedral building has a rectangular shape, adorned with carved stone elements and window frames. It is topped with five domes on large drums decorated with columns.

The entrance to the cathedral is framed by a porch, and a tent-shaped bell tower is attached to the northwest side. The base of the bell tower is a square that transitions into an octagon, which has become traditional for church architecture in Gorokhovets. In 1710, a two-story church of John Climacus was built in the northern part of the monastery, completed in 1716. The first floor of the church was used as storage, while the second floor housed the temple itself, designed in the style of Russian refectory churches.

In the 18th century, the monastery was surrounded by a stone fence with towers at the corners, and the main gates were located in the eastern wall. Above the gates, a church was built in honor of the Protection of the Holy Virgin, characteristic of the 17th century with a small dome and modest facade. Nearby was a building with monks' cells. All the monastery buildings are adjacent to the stone fence, with the Trinity Cathedral located in the center.

In the 19th century, the monastery was under the patronage of Pyotr Pavlovich Kozhin, a hero of the Crimean War and the provincial leader of the nobility in Vladimir. He was buried on the monastery grounds in 1890, and a chapel was erected over his grave.

The monastery was closed in 1920 and transferred to the authorities. The churches were desecrated, property was nationalized, and the Trinity Cathedral was turned into a film distribution warehouse. Later, the monastery was returned to the Vladimir Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, and in 1993, monks began to arrive again. The monastery is currently active, and the Trinity Cathedral houses an icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker with a part of his relics, consecrated in Bari.
