The Stavropegial parish of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate in Sydney was founded in 1989. Since then, services have been regularly held in the church. The first rector of the parish was Archpriest Vladimir Makeev, who served from 1989 to 2010. After him, Priest Alexander Filchakov became the rector in 2010.
In 2014, the parish celebrated its 25th anniversary. Since December of that year, Priest Samuel Vishnevsky has been appointed as the rector of the church.
The current building of the church was purchased from the Greek diaspora and is a converted residential house with a dome.
The question of constructing a large church that can accommodate everyone wishing to attend services on Sundays and holidays is an urgent necessity. The Protection Church will become a towering landmark of the entire nearby neighborhood.
The construction project is developed based on prototypes of multi-tiered wooden churches from Russia and Belarus and adapted to the local site.
