In the 20th century, a mission of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra operated in Salt Lake City, but it lasted only a short time due to the lack of a permanent priest. In 2005, a new mission was established in the city in honor of St. George the Victorious. Initially, the parish gathered in a mobile home and a rented building of a former Greek church. In 2009, the community, which has 150 members, purchased a plot to build its own church, which was consecrated with a copy of the Kursk-Root Icon of the Mother of God.

Architect Maxim Smith, who also worked on the restoration of the Provo City Library and the Utah State Capitol, designed the church in the style of 13th-century Russian churches of Veliky Novgorod, as well as the Yuriev and Antoniev monasteries. The black domes of the church resemble the appearance of the latter.

Currently, the church hosts the Sisterhood of St. Xenia, the Sunday School of St. John of Kronstadt, and a church choir. The parish has about 200 parishioners.
