The St. Alexius Church in Leipzig is located at the site of significant events from the early 19th century, known as the "Battle of the Nations." This church was built in memory of the Russian soldiers who fell in this battle, as a symbol of Russian glory.

In October 1813, the largest battle of the Napoleonic Wars took place near Leipzig. Before World War I, history had not seen battles of such scale. In these fierce battles, the armies of Russia and its allies, despite heavy losses, managed to achieve victory over the French, marking the beginning of the end for Napoleon.

Before the construction of the St. Alexius Church in Leipzig, there was only a private Russian Orthodox church mentioned since 1744. In the 18th century, it was visited by Count Dobrynsky, the son of Empress Catherine II and Count Grigory Orlov. In 1775, the church was closed, and Russian residents began attending the Greek parish. This continued until the early 19th century, when a new stone church emerged.

Since 1907, funds were raised in Russia and Germany for the construction of the new church. The design and fundraising were overseen by Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich, the brother of the emperor.

The project was prepared by one of the outstanding Russian architects of that time, Vladimir Alexandrovich Pokrovsky, inspired by the style of Russian tent churches of the 17th century. The Church of the Ascension in Kolomenskoye served as a model.

On December 28, 1912, the foundation of the Memorial Church was laid, and less than a year later, the church, standing 65 meters tall, was consecrated in honor of St. Alexius, Metropolitan of Moscow. On the eve of this event, the remains of the heroes of the "Battle of the Nations" were ceremoniously transferred here.

The Alexius Memorial Church has existed for over a hundred years. During this time, it has experienced a brief closure during World War I, a period under the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, bombings during World War II, and much more. Today, the church is actively functioning and belongs to the Berlin and German Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church.
