The guiding sign from the late 19th century, presumably from the 1890s, is the oldest navigation structure on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus. On the 1920 map, it is marked as a front guiding sign, while the rear one was located behind and was taller. Unfortunately, the rear sign has not survived. This object is linked to the early stages of navigation development in the Tsemess Bay and the first successes of the port, serving as a unique welcoming and guiding point for thousands of vessels arriving in Novorossiysk.

This sign is analogous to the Gelendzhik rear guiding sign, which operated in tandem with the old lighthouse and was located slightly above the bypass road near the Safari Park. The condition of the Gelendzhik sign was significantly better than that of the Novorossiysk one, which suffered during the war and was on the verge of destruction. In the spring and summer of 2019, the Novorossiysk guiding sign was restored by a group of enthusiasts with the support of the city's benefactors.
