Spasskaya Tower in Novgorod Kremlin

Фото 1
Spasskaya Tower, rising above the moat, received its name in ancient times. The main street of Lyudina, known as Proboynaya, led to the gates located in the tower. Like many other towers, it got its name from the church above the gate, which was destroyed in the 18th century. In its place, a wooden chapel was first built, followed by a stone chapel in the name of the All-Merciful Savior. Later, on the lower floor, where the well was located, a chapel of the Life-Giving Spring was arranged. The well was considered sacred, and many sought healing from its waters. During the post-war restoration, the tower was returned to its 15th-century appearance, and the chapel building was dismantled.
