The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Lord with two porches is located on the territory of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery in the Ryazan Kremlin. Its construction was completed in 1702 under the guidance of Mikhail Fyodorovich Nemchinov with the abbot Archimandrite Lev. This tall square church with an altar semicircle is topped with a single dome with a cross. Inside, there once stood a five-tiered iconostasis created in the early 18th century in the Baroque style, with well-preserved icons. To the right of the royal gates were icons of the Transfiguration of the Lord and the Resurrection, and to the left, the Theodotievskaya icon of the Mother of God and the Meeting of the Lord, adorned with silver robes and gilded crowns. In 1754, merchant Ivan Vasilyevich Osminin generously decorated these robes. However, neither the icons nor the robes exist anymore. In 1800, the iconostasis underwent restoration, modeled after the iconostasis of the Assumption Cathedral of the Ryazan Kremlin. The exterior of the church was adorned with tiles under the windows and along the cornice, which were nearly destroyed in 1905, but were preserved thanks to the intervention of the Learned Archival Commission. After the Bolsheviks came to power, the cathedral was closed and turned into a storage for icons and church utensils from other temples. Among them were icons from the Kazan Women's Monastery, including the Appearance of the Mother of God to St. Seraphim of Sarov, painted by Professor A. Zhivago. A cache of monastery icons was discovered under the dome. The church tiles were broken and covered with lime. Later, the cathedral was transferred to the provincial museum, and then in 1962 the building became an archival storage for the State Archive of the Ryazan Region. By 2007, almost nothing remained of the former decoration, and the cathedral was handed over to the Russian Orthodox Church. The restoration took a lot of time and effort, but services could already be held. On August 19, 2008, Archbishop Pavel of Ryazan and Kasimov performed a minor rite of consecration, and for the first time in nine decades, the Divine Liturgy took place. From August 19, 2008, to January 20, 2009, the cathedral was open to all, and daily services were held there. On Palm Sunday, April 12, 2009, Archbishop Pavel performed the Great Consecration, and the renovated cathedral reopened its doors to the faithful. Since then, daily services have been held in the Transfiguration Cathedral.
