The belfry, standing separately from the Assumption Cathedral in Kolomna, is located in the northwest part of the Cathedral Square of the Kolomna Kremlin. It plays an important role in shaping the architectural ensemble of the square. Originally, the belfry was built of stone, but by the end of the 17th century, it had fallen into disrepair. At the initiative of Archbishop Nikita, a new brick belfry was erected in its place in 1692. In 1929, during the anti-religious campaign of the Bolsheviks, the Assumption Cathedral was desecrated, and the bells from the belfry were thrown down. In 1962, under the guidance of E. R. Kunitskaya, the belfry was restored. In 1990, it was restored again, and in December of the same year, 8 new bells were installed on it.

The belfry, associated with the 17th-century tradition, is notable for its large size. The massive cube of the base supports a wide octagonal bell chamber topped with a tent roof featuring three rows of sound windows. The square section, divided into two tiers, is covered by an eight-part vault on stepped trompes. In the center is a hollow cylinder with a spiral staircase leading to the bells. The facades, decorated with paired half-columns, cornices, and moldings, emphasize the significance of the architectural forms of this outstanding structure.
