Ascension Cathedral of the Ascension Women's Monastery in Tambov

Фото 1
The first stone church of the monastery, dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord, was laid in 1791 in the southern part of the monastery. The architects were the novice of the Sarov Monastery, Nafanael, and the local master, Ivan Kruglikov. Bishop Theophilus assisted in the construction and consecrated the church seven years later. The Ascension Church underwent repairs twice: in 1863 and 1906. In 1907, two side chapels were added, dedicated to Saint Great Martyr Catherine and Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra in Lycia. The artistic painting, completed in 1910, was done by Moscow masters.

In 1925, the church was closed, and two years later, it was handed over to the city council for cultural and educational purposes, with the bells removed from the bell tower. Since the 1930s, the Ascension Church has not been mentioned in archival documents.
