The district town of Tim was founded in 1779 on the site of the village of Vygornoye. In 1924, it lost its status as a town and became an urban-type settlement, serving as the district center in the Kursk region.

The stone Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was built in 1835 thanks to the efforts of the parishioners. The church had three altars: the main one in honor of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the southern one in honor of the Mother of God, the Life-Giving Spring, and the northern one in honor of the Great Martyr Paraskeva Friday. A parish school operated at the church. On July 21, 1939, the Kursk Regional Executive Committee decided to close the Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the parish was dissolved, and the buildings were repurposed for a cultural institution. During the war of 1941-1945, the church was destroyed, and in the 1950s, it was dismantled for building materials.
