Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Verkholensk

Фото 1
In the early 20th century, the ancient wooden churches of Verkholensk became dilapidated. Built in the 18th century, they could no longer accommodate all the parishioners, whose number exceeded 4,500. Therefore, it was decided to build a new stone cathedral. It was consecrated on January 21, 1907, and had three chapels: the main one in honor of the Resurrection of Christ, the right one in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, and the left one in the name of Saints Nicholas, Tikhon of Zadonsk, and Gregory the Theologian. Despite the consecration, the cathedral remained unfinished due to lack of funds. Instead of the planned bell tower above the porch, a small dome was temporarily installed. The cathedral has remained in this form to this day. The Resurrection Cathedral became one of the few churches returned to the faithful after the war at their request. Services resumed on August 28, 1945, but in 1961 the building again came under the jurisdiction of the district executive committee and was turned into a club. Now the cathedral again belongs to the faithful, and restoration work is underway.

The cathedral is located in the center of the village, which was previously a town. This cult structure from the early 20th century is inspired by 17th-century architecture. Its complex volumetric-spatial composition with chapels, an altar, and a deacon's room, as well as the absence of a traditional tiered bell tower replaced by a small dome, give the cathedral a unique appearance. The high square of the temple is topped with a decorative five-domed structure, while the side projections of the chapels are significantly lower. The facades are stylized to resemble the brick patterns of the 17th century, but with enlargement and schematism: wide strips, half-columns at the corners, window frames with a keel-shaped finish, and other elements. The architecture of the cathedral is similar to the Irkutsk Alexandrian and Tulun Protection churches, built according to the designs of civil engineer A.S. Pokrovsky. The almost complete identity of the layout and stylistic unity of the facades suggest that the design of the Resurrection Cathedral also belongs to the diocesan architect A.S. Pokrovsky.

Since 2007, restoration work has been carried out: dismantling of internal ceiling structures, removal of plaster, and restoration of the dome covering. At this stage, the work was suspended. Currently, the church is only used in the volume of the right chapel in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. The main cause of deformations and damage to the load-bearing structures of the building is the deformation of the foundations caused by soil conditions and the mode of operation. Conducting urgent emergency measures will allow the restoration of the church to continue, ensuring the preservation of all main structural elements and decor.
