On October 20, 2019, a historic entry was made in the annals of the Svyensky Monastery regarding the visit of Patriarch Kirill and the great consecration of the cathedral dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos.
In 1930, the Dormition Cathedral was destroyed by an explosion. Its ruins remained in the center of the monastery until 2005, when the area was cleared and prepared for restoration. That same year, an architectural project was developed. In 2011, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill conducted a Divine Liturgy within the remaining walls of the cathedral and called upon all concerned to participate in its revival. Restoration work began that same year. The construction lasted eight years under challenging conditions of funding shortages, but ultimately the majestic cathedral was recreated.
