Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Ruins

Фото 1
The dome-shaped church in the form of a cross, typical of the architecture of Left-Bank Ukraine in the 17th-18th centuries, stands out with its main volume formed by four powerful five-sided arms in two levels. The crossing is crowned with a high light octagon. The centrality of the composition is disrupted by the lowered volumes of the deacon's room and the altar, located on either side of the altar and ending with semicircular side apses. The picturesque and expressive character is given by the shaped roofs of the arms and the typical Ukrainian pear-shaped dome of the octagon. The baroque decor of the facades includes rusticated pilasters with panelled niches at the corners, massive half-columns between the arms, wide entablatures, and elegant shaped pediments above the five-sided sections with arched niches in the tympanums. At the bottom of the walls are large arched niches with simple frames, interpreted as false windows, and above them, arched windows framed with lush surrounds featuring half-columns and triangular pediments, complemented by plaster rosettes.

Ukrainian architecture is also characterized by portals in the arms of the cross with beveled upper corners and panelled niches. The decor of the octagon, pierced by arched windows, is enhanced by diamond rustication of the corner pilasters and triangles in the frieze of the entablature. Inside, the high five-sided arms of the cross are covered with vaulted ceilings with ribs and are fully open to the central square part of the church, creating a high space. The supporting arches of the arms, resting on corner pylons with cut corners, support the octagon with a vaulted ceiling. Numerous windows in the upper part of the arms and the octagon fill the church with light. The altar and deacon's room, which have barrel vaults with conches, are connected by openings in the side walls to the altar.
