In the ancient town of Zvenigorod, located near Moscow, one can find numerous monuments, each holding centuries of history. In the former Zvenigorod Kremlin, now known as Gorodok, stands the oldest church in the Moscow region, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, founded by Prince Yuri Dmitrievich, son of Dmitry Donskoy, between 1396 and 1399.

This church has been well preserved and is a unique example of ancient Moscow architecture. Inside, one can see partially preserved frescoes created by the great Russian icon painters Andrei Rublev and Daniil Cherny. Several ancient icons by Rublev, which were confiscated during the Soviet era, are now housed in the Tretyakov Gallery.

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has always been respected among princes. A special balcony for the prince and his retinue was arranged in the church, which has been completely preserved to this day, a rarity indeed.

Currently, the cathedral is undergoing restoration but is open for visits. Despite the ongoing work, it continues to impress with its grandeur and beauty of ancient Russian architecture from the Moscow principality, which at that time followed the Vladimir-Suzdal traditions. This can be seen in the later Spassky Cathedral of the Spaso-Andronikov Monastery in Moscow.

Today, the Assumption Cathedral of the Zvenigorod Kremlin is almost forgotten and is mentioned only on one of the coins from the series "Architectural Monuments of Russia," issued in 2012. The restoration is progressing slowly, with funds being raised through donations. Nevertheless, I recommend visiting the cathedral; it will be an unforgettable immersion in history.
