After the Patriotic War of 1812, merchants and believers of Okhansk began the construction of the Assumption Cathedral, completing it in 1829. This cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Mother of God, became the main church of the Okhansk district, which covered the territory from Babki and Nozhovka to Khokhlovka, Siva, and Karagay, corresponding to 11 modern districts of Perm Krai.

From 1918 to 1928, the cathedral served as a cathedral, where services were held by the bishops of Okhansk and the vicar bishops of Perm, making Okhansk the center of Orthodoxy in the Kama region. In 1935, by the decision of the Ural Regional Council, the cathedral was closed, its valuables were plundered, the iconostasis was thrown onto the banks of the Kama, and the necropolis was destroyed. For almost three centuries, worship took place at this site, and services have now resumed.

From the 1940s to the 1980s, the church housed workshops of the Ocher forestry industrial complex. During the war, rifle and automatic rifle stocks, Finnish skis, carts, and sleds were produced here. After the war, the enterprise produced furniture: wardrobes, dressers, nightstands, sofas, and more.

In the mid-1990s, the cathedral fell into disrepair, losing a third of its bell tower, metal roof, windows, and doors. Notable people of Okhansk are buried near the cathedral: priests, merchants, nobles, including the uncle of composer P.I. Tchaikovsky, city mayor V.P. Tchaikovsky, and a hero of the 1812 war. Burials of soldiers of the White Army of A.V. Kolchak, who died during the storming of Okhansk in March 1919, were also discovered here.

In late July 2007, local historian A. Shirin kin appealed to the residents of the city to restore the Assumption Cathedral. Two years later, the bell tower, altar, and refectory were protected from rain and snow. Workers cleaned the dome, the interior walls of the church are being plastered, and beautiful domes with crosses “under gold” have been installed on the altar and main dome. The area near the bell tower, where classes of the Orthodox school are held, has been repaired and protected from rain.

Services are conducted by the rector of the Assumption Cathedral, priest Valery (Ovchinikov), who was sent here in 2008.

Currently, the improvement of the Assumption church continues, and work is simultaneously underway to repair the chapel in honor of the Venerable Fathers Zosima and Savvatiy, the Solovetsky miracle workers.
