In 1845, the construction of the Trinity Cathedral began in Yaran, which became the largest and richest church in the city, built in the Russian-Byzantine style popular in Russia at that time. This church is one of the most striking and monumental in the Kirov region and the most famous of all built in the Vyatka province according to the designs of architect Konstantin Ton. Although it is worthy of a capital city, the cathedral is located in the provincial Yaran, an ancient merchant town. Its impressive exterior solemnly greets all who arrive in the city. The Trinity Church, along with the Assumption Cathedral, is the hallmark of Yaran.
The original building of the Trinity Church with a bell tower was constructed and consecrated on October 19, 1694, but after a century and a half, it fell into disrepair, and repairs could no longer save it. In 1844, the old church was dismantled, leaving only the bell tower from 1698, and the best materials were used for the construction of the new church, which began a year later. In 1857, the cathedral was completed and consecrated. The construction of a new bell tower began in 1878 according to the design of architect A.S. Andreev and was completed in 1889. Before the October Revolution, it housed 21 bells. The bell tower, designed in the style of the towers of the Moscow Kremlin, rises to 66.5 meters and offers a magnificent view of Yaran. Before the revolution, the townspeople used it to tell the time, as the largest bell weighing over two tons struck the hours. The architecture of the bell tower differs from the canons of the Russian-Byzantine style, but it harmoniously blends with the church. During the years of atheism, the bell tower lost its cross, which was cut down and thrown away.
At the base of the lost shrine, an inscription was preserved, discovered by restorers: "forged on August 25, 1878." Thanks to the patron Nikolai Ivanovich Sushentsov, on November 4, 2001, the bell tower received a new cross. The Yaran newspaper "Otchestvo" wrote: "Sunday, November 4, the day of honoring the Mother of God, became the fruit of three years of efforts. The cross was delivered from the Mari El Republic. Services dedicated to the Mother of God were held in the churches, and in the Trinity Church, the raising of the cross on the bell tower took place. Then there was a consecration and a cross procession. The operation to erect the cross was carried out with bated breath by those gathered, as the climbers worked without safety gear. At noon, the cross shone over Yaran, marking deliverance from the power of evil."
The new Trinity Church with a bell tower was built thanks to the help of patrons such as merchants Unzhenins, Nosovs, Roshchins, Sazonovs, and Babenins. The total cost of construction amounted to 23,817 rubles and 99.5 kopecks. Merchant of the 1st guild I.V. Lesnikov donated 15,000 rubles and sent an Evangelion worth 1,700 rubles and weighing 14.33 kilograms to the church. Merchant Kuzma Belyaev, acquainted with Alexander Herzen, received the blueprints from architect Ton and brought them to Yaran. The Trinity Church of Konstantin Ton turned out to be magnificent both outside and inside. It has eight altars, three of which are located in the basement, and two in the choir. The cathedral, soaring to the heavens at 41 meters, gives a sense of peace and tranquility. Initially, it was painted in the red color of brick, but later, closer to the beginning of the 20th century, the ensemble was repainted in white-pink tones.
In 1935, the church was closed, and its premises were used for economic purposes: it housed a granary, workshop, boiler room, and bakery, leading to fires. For some time, it was used for film distribution. In 1991, the building was returned to the believers. In the summer of 1998, on the eve of the Feast of the Life-Giving Trinity, the first service was held here. In 1998, the church received the status of a cathedral, and since 2015, it has housed the relics of St. Matthew of Yaran.
