The Holy Trinity Cathedral is located on a high hill in the northern part of Krasnoyarsk, at the beginning of the road to Yeniseisk. It has become an important architectural dominant, rising above the flat landscape of the city and maintaining its significance as an urban landmark.
This cathedral is an interesting example of cult architecture from the first half of the 19th century, executed in the traditions of late classicism. The stone church has an elongated chapel along the entire building at the site of the northern arm of the cross. The cubic temple is topped with a massive light drum with a flat ceiling and a spherical roof with a short spire on a quadrangular base. To the west, there is a tall four-tiered bell tower with a spire and a small dome. On the northern, western, and southern sides of the lower tier of the bell tower, there are blind niches. The interior retains iconostases in the classical style, made in red with gilded carvings. The walls are decorated with paintings created in the 1960s. The walls of the cathedral are made of brick.
Construction of the church began after the closure of the city cemetery at the All Saints Church and its relocation across the Kacha River. On August 15, 1831, merchants and townspeople of Krasnoyarsk decided to request permission to build a cemetery church across the river. In the spring of 1835, the Yenisei provincial government approved the building plan developed by architects D. Makovetsky and P. A. Sharov. Like many Siberian churches, the Holy Trinity Cathedral was built in two stages. The cold Trinity Church was laid on May 20, 1836, and three months later, permission was obtained to construct a warm chapel, which was consecrated in the name of Saint Innocent of Irkutsk on August 21, 1842. The Trinity chapel was consecrated on October 11, 1848. The church was attached to the Resurrection Cathedral. In the 1850s, a stone fence with gates was built at the expense of merchant N. Inozemtsev, and in the 1860s, merchant M. Sazhin erected a stone chapel in the name of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.
Until 1917, the Holy Trinity Church was a cemetery church, but its activities were not limited to funeral services and had significant spiritual importance for the residents of the province. The liturgy and other services were often conducted by Archpriest Vasily Dmitrievich Kasyanov. The church was served by priests from the cathedral, such as Grigory and Innocent Klimovsky, Mikhail Solodchin, Konstantin Tyushnyakov, and others.
In 1917, the church became an independent parish church. By 1936, all churches in Krasnoyarsk were closed, except for the Holy Trinity. However, from November 1937, parishioners were left without pastors, as the clergy were arrested and shot. For two years, prayers continued secretly, and in September 1939, it was decided to close the church. The building was planned to be transferred to an automobile club, but eventually, it housed a workshop for a leather goods factory.
From 1945 to 1961, the church was attached to the Protection Church, and from 1961 to 1990, it served as the main church of the Krasnoyarsk deanery. Since 1992, it has been a cathedral.
In 2004, the cathedral was headed by Archimandrite Nektariy Seleznev, after which the church was renovated, received new bells and iconostases. Relics of many saints were brought to the cathedral. The cathedral has a board of trustees, a Sunday school, and a choir under the direction of V. Ponomarev.
The Trinity Church is a cultural heritage site of federal significance.
