Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Gorokhovets

Фото 1
The Trinity Cathedral that exists today is part of the Nikolsky-Trinity Monastery. It was originally built on the site of an old wooden Trinity church. Construction began in 1681, funded by Semyon Ershov, a well-known townsman, and was completed in 1689.

The cathedral stands on a high base. Below is the Nikolskaya church, and above, the cold temple dedicated to the Life-Giving Trinity. From 1790 to 1792, a large Transfiguration chapel was added to the cathedral, and in 1894, a stone porch was built.

The cathedral is a three-apsidal, two-story, rectangular building without columns, topped with five domes. The temple is divided into three parts: the main hall, the apse, and the narthex.

The main volume of the second floor is covered by a vaulted ceiling and has a square shape with pilasters. The walls are pierced with window openings, decorated with frames featuring serrated and keel-shaped finishes. At the upper part of the walls are semi-circular kokoshniks supported by a cornice of teeth and half-rollers. The apses of the temple are divided by semi-columns and have several windows with decor.

On the western side of the narthex, there are three window openings, two simple windows, and a door opening on the second floor. The corners of the wall panels are framed and topped with a patterned cornice.

A small staircase leads to the second floor from the north side, covered with a single-pitched roof. The porch columns are adorned with multi-profiled trims and topped with a spherical roof.

The main volume is covered with a metal four-pitched roof. The four corner drums and the central drum are blind. The domes are decorated with ornamental semi-columns with beads, and above them runs a cornice with several projections. The building of the temple is entirely made of brick.

The Trinity Cathedral is the largest among all the churches of the monastery. From the north, it is partially obscured by the bell tower and the abbot's house, but it is well visible from other sides. The cathedral is located in the center of the monastery grounds and represents a five-domed structure with a narthex, bell tower, and southern porch, forming a unified compositional solution. The southern and northern facades are executed in one plane but have different heights, creating a stepped silhouette. The outer facades are whitewashed, and the roofs are painted brown. The windows are adorned with wrought iron decorative grilles.
