The Cathedral of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God in the Trinity Optina Monastery was built in the mid-19th century. From 1852 to 1856, under Archimandrite Jeremiah, a majestic brick cathedral with four pillars and five domes in the Russian style was erected. It was built on the site of the dismantled Nativity Church and became the guardian of the miraculous Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, attracting tens of thousands of pilgrims annually. The cathedral also had chapels dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God and Tikhon of Zadonsk. In the 1920s, during the Soviet regime, the cathedral was closed. Around 1929, like the neighboring Church of St. John the Baptist, it was dismantled for bricks.
