On December 19, 1990, Archbishop of Samara and Syzran, Eusebius, along with the clergy of Tolyatti, held a water blessing service for the laying of the first stone of the Transfiguration Cathedral. On the same day, a memorial cross was erected with an inscription about the future construction of the cathedral at this site.

The construction of the Transfiguration temple complex in Tolyatti began in June 1992 with the erection of the baptistery of John the Baptist, designed for 800 people, and the adjacent administrative building.

The design of the Spaso-Transfiguration Cathedral involved the design management of OAO 'AvtoVAZ', the architectural department of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, and the construction organizations 'Hydromontazh' and 'Monolith'.

On May 28, 1996, Bishop Sergey laid the first stone for the construction of the Spaso-Transfiguration Cathedral and conducted a water blessing service in the presence of numerous clergymen and guests. The stone, laid together with a commemorative plaque in the brickwork of the temple, is a fragment of a stone from Mount Tabor, where the Savior revealed His Transfiguration to the disciples. This stone was given to a group of Tolyatti pilgrims by the abbot of the Transfiguration Monastery on Mount Tabor.

On August 19, 2002, on the day of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the solemn consecration of the Spaso-Transfiguration Cathedral took place in Tolyatti, after which Archbishop Sergey of Samara and Syzran conducted the Divine Liturgy.

All expenses for the construction of the cathedral were borne by OAO 'AvtoVAZ'. The construction was carried out by the capital construction management of industrial buildings and structures of OAO 'AvtoVAZ' and general contractors: AO 'Hydromontazh', 'Kuibyshevbolgarstroy', and LLC 'Invest-Auto'.

The 62-meter-high temple rises prominently in the center of the Avtozavodsky district. The construction area is 2,800 square meters. The cathedral includes the main altar in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord, a southern altar in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and a northern altar in honor of the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste, choirs, a western narthex, northern and southern porches, and a basement. The central iconostasis reaches a height of 15 meters. The floors of the cathedral are decorated with multicolored mosaics made from 12 types of marble. The carved oak doors with brass fittings and grilles are impressive. The crosses on the domes are made of stainless steel with a gold coating.
