Transfiguration Cathedral in Mhar

Фото 1
The Transfiguration Cathedral, built between 1684 and 1692, has a rich history. According to preserved documents, the project was developed by I. Baptist, assisted by M. Tomashevsky. After Baptist's death, the work was completed by master A. Pyriatinsky, and the carpentry was done by the 'Teselev master' D. Vorona. The cathedral was modeled after the Trinity Monastery Cathedral in Chernihiv, also created by Baptist. In 1728, the central dome of the cathedral collapsed, and in 1736, the building was damaged by fire. During the restoration in 1754, the exterior changed: the number of domes was reduced, and decorative plaster was added. The cathedral is made of stone, has a rectangular shape, three naves, six pillars, and five domes; the main volume features a polygonal apse, while the corner towers and transept are marked by risalits on the facades. The facades are adorned with a wide cornice, Ionic pilasters, and are topped with picturesque pediments typical of civil buildings.

The plaster decor of the cathedral is executed in bas-relief technique with distinctly realistic compositions. The interior combines deep and vertical principles of space revelation, and thanks to the division of the side naves into two tiers, the central nave gains special significance. The interior is characterized by unique plasterwork, and the vertical movement is emphasized by the Ionic fluted pilasters.

This monument is one of the finest examples of Ukrainian Baroque, where the creative reinterpretation of the traditions of ancient Russian architecture of the 11th-12th centuries combines with the achievements of Baroque-Renaissance architecture of Western Europe.
