It is documented that in the second half of the 17th century, there was a Sergius church in the Varnitsa monastery. In the 21st century, during the restoration of the Trinity-Varnitsky Monastery, it was decided to build a cathedral in the center of the monastery in honor of St. Sergius, coinciding this event with the 700th anniversary of his birth. In 2007, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II blessed the construction of the Sergius church and personally approved its design. By the anniversary in 2014, when the 700th anniversary of St. Sergius's birth was celebrated, the church was erected in honor of the great ascetic. The Cathedral of St. Sergius of Radonezh completes the restoration of the architectural ensemble of the monastery in the homeland of the great Abbot of the Russian Land.
