Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ in Bolkhov

Фото 1
The ensemble of the churches of the Nativity of Christ and Saint Alexius, Metropolitan of Moscow, is located on a high bank of the Nugh River in the northeastern part of the city of Bolkhov.

The Church of the Nativity of Christ previously belonged to the Christ Nativity Monastery, which was abolished in 1764, after which the church became a parish. The stone building of the church was erected no later than 1680 and features an octagonal shape on a rectangular base.

This church, active and preserved during the years of persecution of faith, became the custodian of many relics from the churches and monasteries of Bolkhov. The parish continued to exist even during the occupation of Bolkhov with the permission of the German authorities.

Today, it houses particularly revered relics: the Jerusalem icon of the Mother of God, a measure from the icon of the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, the miraculous Tikhvin icon of the Mother of God from the Trinity Optina Monastery, which was revealed in the city and became the Heavenly Protection of Bolkhov, a carved image of Saint Martyr Paraskeva Friday, as well as a rare image of the Savior from the time of Ivan the Terrible. The vaults of the Nativity Church preserve 19th-century frescoes. This church serves as the cathedral city church and is one of the most famous in Bolkhov. Currently, a procession with the miraculous Tikhvin icon of the Mother of God has been revived from the Christ Nativity Church to the Trinity Optina Monastery.
