Cathedral of the Transfiguration in Parfenyevo

Фото 1
This church, known since 1616 from the watch books of the Galich district, was a summer parish church. In 1653, it served 120 households in Parfenyevo and surrounding villages. It was located near the marketplace and was referred to in some documents as the "Transfiguration Church in the square." Over time, it became the main church of Parfenyevo, fulfilling not only religious but also trade and mediation functions. The church's cellars housed standards of measures and weights, preserved notes, and pledges. In honor of the patroness of trade, St. Paraskeva Friday, an altar was built in the church, as churches in her honor existed in all the marketplaces of Russian cities. Later, an altar in honor of St. Macarius of Unzhensky appeared in the Transfiguration Church. The church owned lands that constantly caused disputes between the clergy and the townspeople. Extensive correspondence regarding these land conflicts has been preserved in the documents of the Patriarchal office.
