The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in Lukoyanov (Lost)

Фото 1
The Intercession Cathedral, built of stone and featuring three altars with a bell tower, was erected in 1834 with the blessing of Bishop Moses Bliznetsov-Platonov of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas. Construction lasted 10 years and was funded by donations from private individuals as well as state funds allocated by order of Emperor Nicholas I following a request from the city's residents. The total amount spent on construction was 72,572 rubles. The cathedral had three altars: the main altar, dedicated to the Intercession of the Mother of God, consecrated in 1834, and two side altars in the refectory, consecrated in 1826, in honor of All Saints and Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker.

In 1923, the cathedral fell into the hands of representatives of the church renewal schism. In 1927, the agreement between the authorities and the renewal community was terminated due to the small number of believers. In 1931, the Lukoyanov City Council decided to use the former Intercession Cathedral building as a city House of Culture. In the 1930s, the cathedral building was dismantled due to its emergency condition.
