In 1894, a missionary monastery was founded in the Romановский settlement, now known as the city of Kropotkin. The first church of the monastery was dedicated to the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. Later, in 1912, the Intercession Cathedral was built. By the late 1930s, the Kazan Icon church was destroyed.

The missionary monastery in Romановский was closed in 1922, but the Intercession Cathedral and the Kazan church remained. From 1929 to 1943, no services were held in the cathedral. In 1976, a large-scale restoration began: the domes were covered with copper, the walls were painted, and the iconostasis was restored and gilded. After 1991, 12 cells were returned to the monastery. In 1999, a bell tower was built and the Kazan church was restored, where the sacrament of Baptism is now performed. The restoration of the cathedral was completed in 2009. The cathedral is located in the historical center of the city and is a monument of history and architecture of the 19th century of federal significance.
