In 1902, a new stone cathedral of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin was built in Aleksandrovsk-Grushevsk. It took the place on Sennaya Square, where an old wooden church had previously stood, which was dismantled after the new temple was consecrated. According to the "Reports on the Intercession Church" from 1909, the church was attended by 4,000 regular parishioners.

The cross-domed Intercession Church with a bell tower measured: length 21.3 meters, width 12.8 meters. Built in the "electric" style, it was heated by a pneumatic Ammosov stove, had 4 iron doors, 16 windows in the church, and 10 windows in the bell tower. The dome was covered with iron and painted ochre, and above it rose a six-pointed iron cross.

In addition to religious activities, the church was involved in educating local residents: it had a large library and a parish school with about a hundred students. In 1906, a parish guardianship was established, which provided the church with everything necessary and supported the school.

Worship continued even after 1917, but with the arrival of the Bolsheviks, the city was renamed Shakhty, and all churches were first robbed and then closed in 1923. After mass protests and repressions, parishioners managed to obtain permission to open a religious community in the Intercession Church, but in February 1933, the cathedral was finally closed. The bells were sent for melting, the dome and bell tower were destroyed, and liturgical books and icons were removed from the church. The building was repurposed as a repair workshop for the tram depot, which remained there until the late 1990s.

In the second half of the 1990s, the building was returned to the faithful. In 1997, Archbishop of Rostov and Novocherkassk Panteleimon visited the tram depot area and blessed the start of restoration work. In the autumn of 1998, when the last tram left the cathedral's territory, clearing and restoration of the church began. The project was based on measurements from 1929 and photographs from 1912.

The restored church slightly exceeds its previous dimensions, with a 33-meter high bell tower added, right and left chapels, a five-domed superstructure 24 meters high, and an altar bypass.

Today, the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin serves as the spiritual and administrative center of the Shakhty Diocese. The church hosts courses on "Fundamentals of Orthodox Culture," a spiritual and educational center, a parish school, a Cossack youth organization "Dontsy," a library, and a social service. Events are held in the cathedral square.

After many years of desecration, the church has once again become a part of the life of the Orthodox residents of the city. It houses many relics, including an icon with a particle of the relics of St. John Chrysostom, a reliquary with particles of the relics of St. Dmitry of Rostov, and a particle of the coffin of Grand Duchess Elizabeth and Nun Barbara.
