Cathedral of Archangel Michael in Veliky Ustyug

Фото 1
The Archangel Cathedral is a five-domed rectangular building with a symmetrical layout, where the altar is separated from the main part of the church by a wall. A two-story gallery adjoins the cathedral on three sides, with a porch leading to the second floor. In the northwestern corner of the gallery is a two-tiered bell tower with a tent roof, characteristic of Ustyug churches. The facades of the church and bell tower lack "ornamentation" and decorative plaster, with the walls adorned only by pilasters and thin horizontal bands that separate the upper decorative arches.

From the southern facade of the cathedral extends a two-story gallery-bridge with two porches on different sides, connecting the cathedral to the refectory built in the mid-18th century. The volume of the refectory is very simple: a massive building with rarely placed arched windows and loopholes resembles constructions of the 16th century, although it belongs to the 17th century. The western facade is decorated with a gable featuring a decorative niche window in the center and narrow slits on the sides. The main room of the refectory is square in shape, with a square pillar in the center. On the eastern side, a single-domed, column-free church of the Presentation adjoins the refectory, which, like the Archangel Cathedral, is characterized by simplicity. Its facades are smooth and calm, with decorative treatment present only on the drum of the dome.
