Фото 1
In the 1670s, Patriarch Joasaph issued a blessed decree to the townsman S. Ershov for the construction of the church of the Icon of the Mother of God 'Sign' in the Holy Sign Monastery. The church, built of brick, has a single-domed, pillarless structure with an altar on the southern side. The main cubic volume is covered by a vaulted ceiling and topped with a four-pitched roof with a cylindrical drum and an onion-shaped dome. The three-part apse of the church consists of three semicircles and reaches the height of the middle of the main volume. The composition of the church is asymmetrical: the tall tent-shaped bell tower is shifted to the south of the central axis. The main volume dominates the spatial structure of the building. The bell tower is a tall octagon on a low rectangular tier, with arched openings for the bells and topped with a tent and an onion-shaped dome. The asymmetry is enhanced by the southern altar, which has its own volume with a barrel vault, a refectory, an apse, and a covered porch, nearly equal in height to the apse of the main volume. The decor of the church includes arched kokoshniks on a band of dry bricks and horizontal beams, segmental windows with decorative frames, horizontal beams, and strips of edging around the perimeter of the southern altar and apse. The drum is adorned with an arcature-columned belt, and the arched openings for the bells are topped with keel-shaped kokoshniks. The Sign Church is the central structure of the monastery, located at its center. The church is almost square in plan, with an apse of three semicircles. Attached to the back of the main volume is a porch, in the southwestern part of which is the bell tower, and in the northwestern part, the altar of John the Theologian with a semicircular apse to the east. The arched doorway of the porch is decorated with a white-stone porch and a lace metal canopy. The arched window openings are framed with a half-roll and topped with triangular kokoshniks. The corners of the bell tower's square are adorned with pilasters, and the cornice consists of two projections. The columns of the bell tower and the beams between them are framed with a two-tiered beam of half-rolls and projections. Each side of the tent is divided by a half-column, with two rows of dormer windows. The double-leaf doors of the main volume are wooden. The foundations of the church are laid with wild stone and lime mortar. The facade is finished with plaster and whitewashing, while inside, it is plastered and whitewashed. The Sign Church is a typical monument of 17th-century church architecture, belonging to the pillarless single-domed parish churches with ornate decor and a tent-shaped bell tower.
